So ! We only went n bloomin done it, ain’t we?
Launched Anima this week on Wednesday at the brilliant Photobook Cafe in Shoreditch. Thanks to all the people who made the effort to come down - so many faces, so many friends, new friends made and so so many words from me. [I do believe I reached my daily word count within about half an hour].
Thank you everyone for making it such an event.
Of course one might expect a photographer to consider taking proper set up photographs of their own first book launch, but a la mode Elle, I instead found myself fully immersed in the actual presence of the place. The original photobooth strip pictures, mounted onto found vintage papers, were laid out across one presentation shelf where people could adorn some very fine white gloves and shuffle through the pages. There was a huge screen which played out a slideshow of everyone’s faces from the book.. this was both inside and outside for onlookers in the square. Upon one shelved wall lay sample books, with framed posters and various postcards dotted around. And in each bathroom was a newspaper poster print for the event. Bam!
Ah yes, and the books. Duh.
People from Autofoto London, the Florence days, Falmouth days, Whitstable, London the first time, School Days, the North, the West, the Up the Down, London the second time, New faces who’ve found me via here (shout out Shilpi!), and others who keep drifting back into my mind.. I really am so grateful to have seen so many people, and for you to all have kept a piece of Anima from the night. Big up Alice the curator for helping arrange the night too.
Currently I have two remaining special editions, and a few more standard editions. You can read about these online, where you can also purchase the poster - alternatively, email me to get us both the best deal on postage etc.
If you’d like to try before you buy, I also recommend any London based folk to take a trip to The Photographer’s Gallery. Downstairs is one of my fave bookshops, full of picture books (and some text ones, just for good measure).. and I’m pretty chuffed to say Anima is stocked there too.
So. Once again thanks to all who came, and those who have so far bought a book. It means a lot to have your support in these early days.
…I’m already working on the next body of work, which will involve quite a community, so if you’re up for being part of that, drop me a line and I'll explain a bit more.
Much love.
Elle.
PS. Liz Seabrook, a brilliant human with a great photographic eye dropped by and took my portrait. It’s rather funny having the camera turn towards you, when you’re so used to taking the pics yourself. I recommend you look at her work, the light oozes out of them.
Congrats 🖤
so wonderful to have had the chance to look through and TOUCH the books, so many textures and emotions. Everything was done with so much care and sensitivity...went home inspired
